Exploring The Local Area – Dog Friendly

We live in a beautiful part of North Devon, so every now and then we step out and explore! Last Saturday morning, we decided to go out for brunch. Our first stop was the Puffing Billy Cafe, just outside Torrington, right on the Tarka Trail.

I had a ‘Station Master’s Breakfast’ while Teresa opted for the smaller ‘Tarka Breakfast’. Both were delicious and filling. They offer a good variety of choices for everyone, including a special ‘Canine Menu’  – there is eating inside and out which is very much Dog Friendly.

After letting our breakfast settle, we headed to Appledore, near Westward Ho!, about a 15-minute drive from Bideford.  Bideford was bustling with activity due to the Annual Port of Bideford Regatta. Once in Appledore, we found it busier than usual, likely because of the good weather and favourable tide for launching boats and jet skis. Appledore is dog friendly, with lots of people around good idea to keep a close eye on them!

Parking along the side of the road was full, so we opted for the main car park, which had plenty of spaces and convenient Ringo payment options. The car park was busy with vehicles and trailers, all neatly organized. It even had a small play park for the kids, which was quite busy.

Appledore Narrow Streets

We wandered through the narrow side streets and explored the hidden craft shops. The aroma of fish and chips was tempting, but we had eaten just 45 minutes ago! After exploring the side streets, we headed back to the Hockins van because Teresa wanted her favorite treat: a locally made ice cream that is only available from March to October.

Near the slipway, we spotted a peculiar contraption that looked like a bell on a tripod. It turned out to be the Appledore Bell, which has its own unique sound. Timing is key, or you’ll miss it.

As it was time to head back home to meet our next guests, we couldn’t visit the Coffee Cabin or the Flame Factory this time. We’ll have to save those for our next adventure!  If you looking for a dog-friendly break then Devonia Escapes is the obvious choice as we are so close to gems like this.
